News ESI UK announces a free CFD seminar at The Oxford Science Park, Oxford, UK on December 5, 2006.

The day will include an overview of ESI Group's CFD Ace and CADalyzer, simulation of fuel cells, multiphysics simulation of MEMS applications, plasma and chemical vapour as well as CFD simulation of semi-conductor process and design.

There will also be a presentation from Oxford Brookes University on computational techniques in biomedical engineering.

Interview with Richard Bardwell of Sharc Ltd.

News Richard Bardwell started Sharc Ltd. in 1997 with Dr. Mark Gallagher. Their mission is to promote and develop automated CFD. They have satisfied a major part of their mission by developing Harpoon, the extreme mesher that turns the days and long hours usually required to create a useful mesh into an automatic process that creates high-quality meshes in minutes. Based in Manchester, Sharc is also the distributor for CEI’s full line of products in the United Kingdom and Ireland.

We talked to Richard to find out a bit more about the man behind the mesher.

How did you become involved in simulation?
I started straight out of the University of Manchester, beginning in the loads and dynamics department at BAE Systems. I used simple NASTRAN models and aero calcs to predict flutter on the Airbus A340. I then moved to GEC, where I was involved in the Towed Decoy on the Eurofighter project. After that, I worked on the Brimstone missile project for the Harrier and Tornado. From there it was to Rover/BMW, where I helped introduce CFD, working on the external aerodynamics of 4x4 vehicles. My final stop before Sharc was with Boeing in Seattle, where I did flutter calcs on the Boeing 737 NG (Next Generation).

New Software: ESI Group Unveils New CFD Products

News At their recent International CFD Users Conference, ESI Group announced the release of the 2007 version of their CFD products.

ESI's Advanced CFD solutions include CFD-ACE+ for multidisciplinary and multi-physics simulation, CFD-FASTRAN for aerodynamic and aerothermodynamic simulation, and CFD-CAD alyzer for CAD integrated CFD simulation. Application: Perfecting a Life-Saving Blood Pump

Application The MicroMed DeBakey Ventricular Assist Device (VAD), an axial flow blood pump implanted in a patient’s chest to bypass his ailing heart, is being refined with the help of Apple technology.

Professor Marek Behr of RWTH Aachen University uses finite element analysis (FEA) techniques and a Xserve cluster and Mac desktops to make blood pumps such as the MicroMed DeBakey VAD even more durable and patient-friendly.

Stanford University Professor to Receive Prestigious Elmer A. Sperry Award

News The Elmer Sperry Board of Award is pleased to announce that Antony Jameson, Thomas V. Jones Professor in the School of Engineering at Stanford University in Stanford, California, has been chosen to receive the 2006 Elmer A. Sperry Award.

The Elmer A. Sperry Award was established in 1955 to commemorate the life of Elmer A. Sperry, whose many inventions – including the gyroscope, the first electric automobile, and aid and sea navigational aids – contributed to the advancement of many modes of transportation. The award, consisting of a certificate and medal, will be presented to Jameson on January 7, 2007, in conjunction with the AIAA Aerospace Sciences Meeting in Reno, Nevada.
