Business: CEI Sets Up Houston Office

News CEI, a leader in simulation software for engineering and science, has established an office in Houston, and is seeking a business development manager to head up its regional sales and support operations.

CEI sees the new office as an opportunity to expand its business in industries that have a growing need for software used to analyze, visualize and communicate critical data for oil and gas, aerospace, construction, medical, and other industries prominent in Houston and the surrounding region. The company’s existing customers in the region include Bechtel, ExxonMobil, Lockheed, NASA, Shell, the Texas Advanced Computing Center, and University of Texas, Texas A&M and Rice University.

Events: North American Symposium on Design Integration

News NAFEMS, The International Association for the Engineering Analysis Community, has announced the Symposium on the Integration of Analysis in Product Design, to be held on November 13th 2006 in Chicago, Illinois.

NAFEMS is an independent not-for-profit body with the sole aim of promoting the effective use of engineering simulation methods such as finite element analysis, multibody system dynamics and computational fluid dynamics.

Integrating analysis with the product design process is one of the most talked about topics in the analysis community today. Software vendors, industrial users, and engineering managers all realize the vital importance of timely integration of analysis in the design process, but the visions, opinions and priorities placed on this can vary from one company to the next.

CFD Study Aims for Safer Ethanol Production

News Iowa State University has begun studying ways to replace or reduce the natural gas used in making ethanol by gasifying biomass plant material and turning it into useful energy and renewable products.

The main goal of this research is to find a way to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide that is put into the atmosphere and to find an alternative to natural gas, which would save possibly 20 percent on fuel costs in industrial locations.

With computational fluid dynamics, they can examine how possibly changing the gasifier in some way affects it, and see how it helps the overall product or makes it worse, said Francine Battaglia, associate professor of mechanical engineering.

The release also greatly expands the number of possible application areas for the technology into virtually every field of science, research, and engineering. Key among these enabling features are ready-made couplings between common physics, an even more convenient user interface thanks to a Model Tree, interactive meshing, merging components to build models, the ability to handle CAD assemblies, support for the multiphysics analyis of surface contact, and gains towards fully automatic solver selection. Users can also expand on the package’s internal material database by enacting an online search of the Matweb database and directly importing material properties.

Application: Reducing Gas Turbine Emissions

Application A Pollution Engineering article describes how engineers from Vogt Power Intl. improved the performance of emissions systems of a gas turbine power generating plant.
Using the CFD software as an evaluation tool, the engineers designed a two-zone distribution grid to improve flow distribution entering the CO modules, ammonia injection grid and SCR. Installed just upstream of the CO catalyst modules, the grid redistributed the flow using angled perforated plates that allowed the passage of varying amounts of exhaust gas in different regions of the plane, while limiting an increase in gas-side pressure drop that would decrease the gas turbine efficiency. The engineers used the software to adjust the design of each grid sector, and to evaluate its influence on each component downstream.
