New Software: COMSOL Releases Multiphysics v3.3

News With its enhanced features, COMSOL Multiphysics 3.3 brings simulation and virtual prototyping to a far wider community of engineers. The release also greatly expands the number of possible application areas for the technology into virtually every field of science, research, and engineering. Key among these enabling features are ready-made couplings between common physics, an even more convenient user interface thanks to a Model Tree, interactive meshing, merging components to build models, the ability to handle CAD assemblies, support for the multiphysics analyis of surface contact, and gains towards fully automatic solver selection. Users can also expand on the package’s internal material database by enacting an online search of the Matweb database and directly importing material properties.

Application: Reducing Gas Turbine Emissions

Application A Pollution Engineering article describes how engineers from Vogt Power Intl. improved the performance of emissions systems of a gas turbine power generating plant.
Using the CFD software as an evaluation tool, the engineers designed a two-zone distribution grid to improve flow distribution entering the CO modules, ammonia injection grid and SCR. Installed just upstream of the CO catalyst modules, the grid redistributed the flow using angled perforated plates that allowed the passage of varying amounts of exhaust gas in different regions of the plane, while limiting an increase in gas-side pressure drop that would decrease the gas turbine efficiency. The engineers used the software to adjust the design of each grid sector, and to evaluate its influence on each component downstream.

Application: Video Game Uses Real-Time Fluid Dynamics

Application A classic video game has been refreshed using CFD to create Plasma Pong.

In the game you can inject plasma fluid into the environment, create a vacuum from your paddle, and blast shockwaves into the playing area. All these abilities have fluid-based kinetic effects on the ball, making Plasma Pong a fast-paced and exciting game.

A Gamasutra interview with game author Stephen Taylor reveals that Taylor was inspired by a research paper on real-time fluid dynamics.

Application: Novel Gas Meter Designed Using EFD.Lab Flow Simulation Software

Application Actaris used EFD.Lab computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software from Flomerics to design innovative gas meters. Actaris fluidic meters work on a unique principle of putting an obstacle in the flow stream and using a sensor to measure the resulting oscillations to determine the flow rate.

“EFD.Lab enabled Actaris engineers to quickly and accurately simulate the flow velocity, direction and pressure, making it possible to evaluate new design concepts without the expense and leadtime required to build multiple prototypes,” said Ibne Soreefan, Project Manager for Actaris. “EFD.Lab also provided far more diagnostic information than can be obtained by testing a prototype, enabling engineers to move more directly to an optimized design.”
