Announcements The 8th Symposium on Overset Composite Grids & Solution Technology will be held October 3-5, 2006, at the Gilruth Center of NASA's Johnson Space Center, in Houston, TX, USA.

This international symposium provides an open communication forum for mathematicians, scientists, and engineers from academia, industry, and government. The symposium organization is quite informal, and the primary purpose is to present and discuss new, current, and work in progress of the participants.

Events: UK Simulation Conference

Announcements Simulation engineers are invited to the inaugural UK Simulation Conference (SCUK ’06) taking place on the 17th October 2006 in Swindon.

A key feature of the conference will be the focus on pre and post processing for simulation using EnSight visualisation software, from CEI and Harpoon meshing software from Sharc.

New Software: Harpoon Now Supports Windows 64

News Sharc announced today that its Extreme Meshing software, Harpoon, now supports Windows 64 operating system.

Harpoon users typically create larger meshes and so the 2 GB RAM limitations of 32 bit Windows resulted in the need for multiple operating systems, one for smaller meshes and day to day use and another large memory machine for the bigger jobs.

Events: From 3D Scan to Mesh in Minutes

Announcements Simpleware will hold a session showcasing a number of different case studies which demonstrate the potential of their software for a wide variety of applications in biomechanics at the 5th World Congress of Biomechanics (WCB2006) to be held at the Munich University of Applied Sciences, Munich, Germany, on July 29 – August 4 2006. The examples will also illustrate the ability to complete such complex problems with a high degree of accuracy but in a fraction of the time taken by other approaches.

Image-based meshing is opening up exciting new possibilities for the application of computational mechanics methods (e.g. FEA and CFD) to problems in biomechanics and bio-fluid dynamics. Converting 3D datasets (such as from CT, MRI and Ultrasound) into high quality meshes is becoming the modus operandi for studying the response of complex biological structures.

Application: CFD Used in Design of Land Speed Vehicle

Application The Autospeed Magazine article Diesel Speed Demon describes how JCB, the fifth largest manufacturer of construction equipment in the world, will make a land speed record attempt this August in a bid to earn its purpose-designed streamliner car the title of "World’s Fastest Diesel". To reach speeds of over 300 mph (480 km/h), JCB has developed the world’s most powerful automotive diesel engine, with a specific power of 150hp per litre.

The aim is to set a new record in excess of 300 mph. The current FIA mark stands at 235.756 mph to Virgil W Snyder and the Thermo King Streamliner, a record that dates back to 1973.
