M Ship Wins Contract to Develop CFD Tools for Hull Design

News M Ship Co. announced the U.S. Navy's Office of Naval Research has awarded the firm a $750,000 contract, including options, to validate the potential of the innovative M-hull technology.

The Navy Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contract calls for tank testing and sea trials for the M-hull technology, and the development of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) tools for quantifying the hull's performance.

Earlier this month, M Ship Co. delivered the M 80 Stiletto, an 88-foot vessel that uses the patented M-hull technology. M Ship Co. built the M 80 Stiletto for the Pentagon's Office of Force Transformation (OFT) as part of the OFT's Wolf PAC Distributed Operations Experiment, conducted in association with USSOCOM.

Application: CFD Project Improves Automotive Exhaust Performance

Application jagan prabhu writes "The main objective of our project work was to reduce the backpressure developed in an automobile silencer.

Initially the backpressure value was measured practically for the existing model and its CFD model was built and analysed. In order to reduce the backpressure different geometrical changes were made to the existing silencer in the CFD software and its flow characteristics were studied.

Out of the different models analysed in CFD, the optimized model was chosen and based on the software model a real model was constructed. Its back pressure value was measured practically and it was found to be less than the existing one. FLUENT 6.1 was used to solve the problem."

Application: CD-adapco's STAR-Works Reduces Development Costs

Application CD-adapco, the leading provider of full-spectrum CFD solutions, today announced that partner VIASYS Healthcare had delivered huge savings in product development by utilizing CD-adapco's upfront CFD tool STAR-Works. By using STAR-Works early in their design cycle VIASYS was able to reduce the timescale for the initial design phase of a new ventilator from a year to just three days, saving several hundred thousand dollars in development cost.

VIASYS pneumatic specialist Steve Han and his colleagues were responsible for the redesign of an infant CPAP ventilator device. Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (or CPAP) is a method of respiratory ventilation used in the treatment of apnea, a condition in which a patient's natural external breathing suddenly stops due to a self imposed (but involuntary) obstruction to their airway.

Application: CFD Helps Diagnose High Risk Brain Aneurysms

Application University of Houston engineers are working with neurology specialists on new technology to help identify which brain aneurysms are at highest risk of rupture and could cause a stroke.

In A Stroke of Genius The Engineer Online looks at how CFD is used to study blood flow in realistic geometric models of aneurysms. Using the method, researchers were able to identify blood flow characteristics that may contribute to aneurysm formation.

"One of the key points is that aneurysms don't seem to form randomly," Metcalfe said. "They do seem to form at locations that are associated with the fluctuations in the flow of blood, leading to the question of what it is about the flow of blood that tends to correlate with the formation of aneurysms."

Application: CFD Used to Develop Airflow and Acoustics Control on Fighter Aircraft

Combustion Research and Flow Technology, better known as CRAFT Tech, says it likes to swim in data.

Not just any data, of course. CRAFT Tech immerses itself in terabyte-sized datasets used to simulate complex fluid dynamic and combustive problems. To swim in these waters requires large-scale, parallel architecture computers running specialized CFD codes and the most advanced visualization software.

A recently completed project called HiFAST (High Frequency Acoustic Suppression Technology) showcased CRAFT Tech’s ability to take full advantage of CFD visualizations at every phase of weapons system development. The project, conducted for the Air Force Research Laboratory’s Air Vehicles Directorate (AFRL/VAAI), culminated in a successful flight test of a device that controls internal weapons bay airflow and acoustics.
