Education: New MSc Programme of Study in CFD

News Cranfield University has launched an MSc course in CFD. The course begins in October 2006. The course aims to offer a programme of study to enhance the skills of the graduate student and professional engineer, providing a detailed introduction to the fundamentals of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) together with an insight into the applications of CFD across the breadth of the subject.

Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) has grown from a mathematical curiosity to become an essential tool in almost every branch of fluid dynamics, from aerospace propulsion to weather prediction. In design and development, CFD programs are now considered to be standard numerical tools, widely utilised within industry.

Engineers, Pilots Recall First Shuttle Launch on 25th Anniversary

News There are several interesting recounts of the first space shuttle flight on April 12, 1981. The astronauts called the shuttle "A test pilot's dream" and several Boeing engineers describe their work developing the spacecraft and their feelings watching the first launch.

Zakrzewski describes the engineering work pretty complex for its time. “It was a very dynamic environment with the aerodynamics. When the forward booster separation motors would fire, the entire airflow around the Shuttle was disturbed considerably. The shock waves would come over the front nose of the Orbiter. It’s a very unpredictable environment. I don’t even think current Computational Fluid Dynamics programs could predict that environment adequately. So we had to do a lot of wind tunnel testing,” he explained.

Walt Gillette: Just Plane Genius

News A recent Business Week article chronicles the achievements of Boeing engineer Walt Gillette as he approaches retirement after 37 years designing aircraft. Included in the story is a recount of his early use of CFD:

Gillette used an analytical method called computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to crack the toughest design problems, including figuring out how to sling powerful new engines on the wings of a small 737. "Every time we tried to put one of those big fat nacelles [engine enclosures] close to the wing, we got terrible aerodynamic interference between the nacelle and the wing," Gillette recalled. "The extra drag made it unacceptable."

Events: Fluent Launches International CFD Conference Dedicated to Oil & Gas

ANSYS FLUENT Fluent, the world leader in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software and services, has announced the details for its inaugural International Oil & Gas CFD Conference (IOCC) to be held in London, UK on 30 November – 1 December 2006.

The IOCC will be the world’s only event dedicated to the application of CFD in the oil and gas industry. It will provide a forum to showcase the rapidly growing capabilities of flow simulation technologies and the ever increasing list of design problems it is applied to.
