News Mechanical Solutions has collaborated with industry experts and suppliers to develop HeatSinkDesigner, a low-cost, but powerful, new tool for designing and selecting heat sinks. HeatSinkDesigner is intended to complement, not replace, CFD modeling.

New Software: Flow Science Releases FLOW-3D V9.1

News Flow Science, Inc. announces the availability of a new release of its FLOW-3D® computational fluid dynamics software. Version 9.1 of FLOW-3D® offers users an advanced new VOF technique, extensions to the powerful General Moving Objects model introduced last year and numerous other enhancements to users’ modeling options.

In addition, Version 9.1 will support 64-bit Windows and Linux RedHat Enterprise 3.0 for the x86 64-bit processors in AMD Opteron and Intel Xeon workstations.

ERCOFTAC Forms Special Interest Group for Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics

News ERCOFTAC (European Research Community on Flow, Turbulence And Combustion) has agreed on the creation of a new Special Interest Group for smoothed particle hydrodynamics named SPHERIC (SPH European Research Interest Community) with the participation of 7 laboratories from the following european countries: France, England, Ireland, Switzerland, Italy and Spain.

The announcement follows an initiative by french group issued from a summer school in july 2005. All participants, organizations and laboratories, even from non-European countries, are welcome. The subscription is totally free.

Modeling Metal Foam Heat Exchanger

Help Desk David Dunavant writes "I am wondering if my modeling approach is correct. I have modified thermal conductivity, k, and specific heat, cp, of my fluid based on volume ratios and corresponding properties of metal foam and fluid.

Volumetric flow rate of the fluid is constant. It seems like different pressure drops from different pressure-velocity curves corresponding to different pores per inch (PPI) will not affect thermal performance.

Heat exchange of metal foam is about twice that of conventional baffle-type design. Furthermore pressure drop can be greatly reduced.

Also would appreciate if anyone can provide information about permeability, K, and inertia coefficient, C, of aluminum metal foam since suppliers won't release much information although I do have limited data.

Any assistance is appreciated, thanks.

Business: ANSYS Buys Fluent!

News In a letter to Fluent customers from Fluent CEO Bart Patel and President Ferit Boysan, Fluent has announced that ANSYS will aquire Fluent in a cash+stock deal worth $565 million US dollars.

The combination of Fluent's and ANSYS' software products and services is expected to give ANSYS one of the most complete, independent engineering simulation software offerings in the industry, reaffirming and strengthening ANSYS' commitment to open interface and flexible simulation solutions that are primarily driven by customer demand and choice. With over 40 direct sales offices and 17 development centers, on three continents, the combined company will employ approximately 1,350 people.

Application: Reducing Noise Levels in Automotive Steering Systems

The positive displacement pump used to power hydraulic-assisted steering is one of the main noise sources in an automotive steering system. DHB Componentes Automotivos, a manufacturer of steering systems for automotive and marine applications located in Brazil, is using ANSYS CFX software to analyze and understand the flow behavior within their pumps.

Customers are now looking for cars with very low noise levels. As engines are improved for quiet operation, noise from other areas such as the steering system is becoming more and more apparent. Noise level is now the first requirement analyzed when an automotive manufacturer selects a hydraulic steering system.
