Application: CFD Used to Improve Water Treatment Systems

A secondary clarifier is the final treatment stage of a traditional activated sludge sewage works. It separates solid precipitate material from effluent water prior to discharge. Because of recent changes in environmental legislation, many treatment works in the UK are required to carry increased throughput or meet more stringent effluent quality limits. This means that more clarification capacity is needed. But with land in urban areas scarce and construction costs high, there is an increasing need to maximize the performance of existing units rather than build new ones.

The standard technique for designing a final clarifier is mass flux theory. However, this method uses a one-dimensional settling model and cannot account for the ‘density current’ flow typical in a clarifier.

New Software: FLOVENT V5 Provides Usability, CAD Import and Gridding Improvements

News Flomerics has introduced Version 5 of Flovent airflow design simulation software offering substantial improvements in the areas of usability, CAD import and numerical stability. The menus have been redesigned in the new release to more intuitively guide the user through the modeling process. Analysis accuracy has been improved with a grid-based dissection CAD import method that provides better handling of complex building geometries. Numerical stability has been increased by refining Flovent's unique object-based localized gridding.

Usability has been improved by redesigning the top-level menu system so that it is more consistent with design-based project creation. The node tree has been simplified and focuses on a hierarchical view of the project geometry. The file menu now lists the most recently opened files so they can be quickly re-opened. Menu picks that provide importing and exporting of projects and assemblies have been repositioned on the file menu for easier access. There have also been significant performance improvements in accessing the data associated with very large projects, very often encountered in building applications.

Business: Blue Ridge Numerics Moves Up Deloitte Fast 50

CFdesign For the second consecutive year, Blue Ridge Numerics has been selected to the Deloitte Technology Fast 50. Moving up eight spots from 2003, Deloitte now places Blue Ridge Numerics as the twenty-fifth fastest growing technology company in Virginia. The recognition is based on percentage of revenue growth over five years. The announcement was made October 7th during an awards ceremony at the ESPN Zone in Washington, D.C.

“To make the Deloitte Technology Fast 50, companies within the Virginia region must have had tremendous revenue growth from 1999-2003. Deloitte applauds Blue Ridge Numerics for having the long-term vision to develop technologies that change the way manufacturing companies deliver new products to market,” stated Gary H. Tabach, office managing partner of Deloitte’s McLean Virginia office.

Fluent’s CFD - Aspen Plus Integration Wins Award

ANSYS FLUENT Fluent Inc., the world leader in computational fluid dynamics (CFD), recently won a prestigious 2004 R&D 100 Award for the novel integration of two best-in-class simulation software packages. The integrated simulation packages, used by many engineers in the process industries, are Aspen Plus®, process flowsheet modeling software from Aspen Technology, and FLUENT®, CFD modeling software from Fluent Inc.

The primary goal of the integration is to combine high-fidelity equipment modeling with plant-wide process modeling to enable rapid assessment of innovative new plants involving unique equipment (e.g. fuel cells, gasifiers, complex reactors). The interface enables a comprehensive assessment of how all equipment items work together in a process by allowing detailed fluid mechanics models to plug into the overall flowsheet.
