Application: CFD Used to Improve Missile Control

Application A new desktop engineering article covers the development of a novel flow control system for missiles using actuators and advanced control algorithms. Instead of traditional hinged control surfaces, the aerodynamic surface contains an embedded system of miniature sensors on the outer surface, control actuators, and a real-time feedback controller just below the surface, all of which are unseen from the exterior. Displacement of the actuators creates a large effect on the flowfield around that region.
To validate its research findings and test active flow control system prototypes, ORI’s Aerodynamics Group relies on low- and high-speed wind tunnel tests and CFD simulations. "By combining CFD analysis with wind tunnel experiments," Patel explained, "we are able to reduce the total turnaround time for feasibility studies as well as systems development."

Application: CFD Leads to Better Filter Design

Application Extraction, a leader in semiconductor contamination measurement, has introduced a new filter system which puts proven technology in a significantly smaller footprint, enabling users to lower cost of ownership in deep UV (DUV) lithography.
"By using sophisticated computational fluid dynamics flow modeling techniques, we've succeeded in putting all the power and long-life filter protection of the E3000 in a much smaller footprint," David Ruede, Filtration Group Manager. "A smaller footprint quickly translates to significant savings in cost of ownership and gives users more installation flexibility. These are important advantages as new fabs ramp production and older fabs install new generations of lithography tools."

Application: Research Aims for Happier Landings

Application A recent design engineering article explores how NASA researchers are investigating ways of making military sea-based aircraft landings safer.
The conditions in which sea-based military aircraft can operate are pretty limited: extreme waves, high winds, and the swirling currents of air created by the shape of the ships often conspire to make conditions too dangerous for flight. Now, novel methods of smoothing airflow over warships are being considered by, among others, the MoD and the US Navy.

Booklet: How to Validate Industrial CFD

CFD practitioners in industry frequently use general-purpose "off-the-shelf" software packages to analyse details of flow problems peculiar to their own industry. Although the functionality of CFD software is normally verified and validated by the developer at the unit process level and against standard (canonical) flow experiments, there often remains a significant lack of credibility when it is used in new or more complex flows. The non-general applicability of particular RANS turbulence models is a primary source of uncertainty in flow prediction, but many other factors contribute to the need to verify the accuracy and reliability of flow calculations.
