Booklet: How to Validate Industrial CFD

CFD practitioners in industry frequently use general-purpose "off-the-shelf" software packages to analyse details of flow problems peculiar to their own industry. Although the functionality of CFD software is normally verified and validated by the developer at the unit process level and against standard (canonical) flow experiments, there often remains a significant lack of credibility when it is used in new or more complex flows. The non-general applicability of particular RANS turbulence models is a primary source of uncertainty in flow prediction, but many other factors contribute to the need to verify the accuracy and reliability of flow calculations.

Help Simulating Evaporating Wall in FLUENT

Help Desk gao naiping writes "I do CFD simulations in the field of HVAC. At this moment, I want to simulate the distribution of one poisonous gas in a ventilated room which is evaporated from one wall at a fixed mass flux. However, if I open the equation of species, the wall boundary conditions can only be set as fixed mass fraction or zero diffusion. Could you inform me how to set the wall boundary as fixed mass flux as to the species diffusion. If using UDF, could you give me more details?

By the way, In one of my cases, a human body is placed in a room. The geometry of the human body is obtained from 3D laser scan technique and the body surface is composed by 1200 small patches. If I want to calculate S2S radiation. Will there be any problem in the calculation of view factors?

Sun's AMD Opteron processor-based solutions run the platinum standard for enterprise operating systems (OS) —Solaris, as well as Linux and Microsoft Windows through Windows Hardware Qualification List (WHQL) certification.

"Sun has established clear differentiation in the x86 market by offering Solaris x86 on AMD Opteron processors. This gives them an opportunity to take a strong position in the over $22.5B x86 systems market," said Vernon Turner, group vice president, IDC. "Initial data indicates very strong price/performance relative to other operating systems by taking advantage of the reliability and scalability features of Solaris and AMD's Opteron processor speed".

Minardi F1 Partners With CD adapco

News Minardi F1 Team of Faenza in Italy has recently signed an agreement to qualify the CD adapco Group as its technical partner and official supplier of simulation software.

CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) plays a fundamental role in the design and development of modern F1 cars and the Minardi F1 Team will use the leading CFD code STAR-CD and the expert system tool es-aero for the aerodynamic development of aerodynamic components.

"Some of the parameters we used for the evaluation of CD adapco’s solutions (STAR-CD and es-aero), which won over other proposals, were technical support, competence in external aerodynamics and the ability to work in partnership with hardware vendors,” commented Ing. Gabriele Tredozi, Technical Director of the Minardi F1 Team, “Most of all, we appreciated the unique capability of the es-aero expert tool to deal with complex shapes like F1 cars with a reasonable hardware resource consumption in terms of CPU and RAM. Finally, CAD cleaning options like surface wrapping were judged as an important productivity boost.”

The ability to simulate the behavior and performance of designs very quickly is also a very important consideration for a successful design. “It is very important for a team like Minardi striving to compete in the F1 world to get fast responses in terms of meshing and computational time, and the CD adapco Group is now supplying us with what we need," added Ing. Tredozi.

New Software: CD adapco Releases Tool for Fuel Cell Design

News With increasing environmental concerns and rising oil costs, fuel cells are attracting great interest for transportation and power generation applications as a cleaner and cheaper alternative. In recognition of this, the CD adapco Group in partnership with the Department of Energy’s Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), has developed a new Expert System, es-sofc, which is playing an important role in optimizing SOFC (Solid Oxide Fuel Cell) design.

Fuel cells convert the chemical energy of a fuel, such as hydrogen, into electrical energy without combustion, with little or no emission of pollutants and efficient electrical power generation. This is a significant improvement over internal combustion engines. The new es-sofc tool is “knowledge based”, carrying with it the essential electrochemistry, fluid flow, heat transfer, and geometrical modeling capabilities required for advanced SOFC design.
