As the world’s two leading CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) companies, the CD adapco Group and Fluent Inc, compete for technical supremacy, the release of any new version of their CFD codes is a major event for the CAE industry. The latest version of STAR-CD was launched at the CD adapco Group’s European User Group Meeting in London, March 15-16, and clearly offers CFD users many new features and associated benefits.
Firstly, a choice of CAD-integrated options is now included ‘by default’. The STAR-Design option, for users without a CAD system, offers a robust built-in Parasolid solid-modeling kernel and fast meshing tools, and unlike most commercial CAD systems, it is available on all platforms including Unix, Linux and Windows.

Blue Ridge Numerics, Inc. (BRNI) has announced that Richard Childress Racing (RCR) in Welcome, North Carolina, has selected CFdesign® for virtual prototyping fluid flow and heat transfer performance of automotive components and systems built in Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire.
Recognized as a one of the heavyweights of NASCAR, RCR has a reputation for finding engineering innovations that help current drivers Kevin Harvick, Johnny Sauter, Robby Gordon, Ron Hornaday, and Clint Bowyer cross the finish line first in Nextel Cup and Busch Series races across the country.
"CFdesign is perfect for our high-performance engineering teams," stated David Holden, a team engineer at RCR. "We build prototypes in Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire, hit a button, and instantly we're ready for a CFD simulation that delivers fast results on a workstation PC. If we want to investigate alternative designs, we make the changes in Wildfire and within minutes we're getting real-time results on the new designs from the Runtime Monitor in CFdesign."

Fluent Inc., world leader in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software and services, announces the release of TGrid 3.6, a leading mesh-building tool supplied to its customers and used extensively within the automotive CFD community. TGrid’s new HexCore meshing technology offers a unique advantage to CFD analysts and designers, particularly when modeling fluid flow problems with open spaces, where a high mesh quality is required. This condition is commonly encountered in the modeling of automotive cabin interiors or complex internal ventilation designs, among others. “50% cell count reduction can be obtained on these types of applications using HexCore with no sacrifice in mesh quality,” says TGrid Product Manager Erling Eklund. “With a speed and ease-of-use comparable to our Tet Mesher, and with high quality hexahedral cells, HexCore will lead to faster and more accurate CFD simulations for many automotive applications,” he adds.
