CEI Adds Macintosh OS X Support
Posted Mon March 08, 2004 @04:38PM
Print version Email story Tweet story
Post Processing CEI has added support for the Macintosh OS X platform to its EnSight, EnSight Gold, EnLiten, EnVideo and EnVe visualization products.

EnSight and EnSight Gold are software for visualizing, analyzing and communicating computational results for automotive, aerospace, chemical and scientific visualization problems. EnLiten, EnVideo and EnVe are free software packages that provide an easy way to use EnSight animations for collaboration and communication.

CEI officially supports the Panther (10.3) version of Mac OS X, which includes support from Apple for X11 graphics. The company recommends that Jaguar (10.2) users upgrade to Panther for its software enhancements and improved X11 support. EnSight, EnSight Gold and EnLiten are currently X11-based applications. EnVideo and EnVe are already native Mac OS applications.

News The CD adapco Group will be demonstrating their latest products at the upcoming SAE World Congress.

The Group will be demonstrating the latest version of its CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) code STAR-CD, which has enhanced capability for simulating the wide range of flow processes in and around vehicles including external aerodynamics, underhood thermal management, engine and aftertreatment processes, climate control and more.

The company’s next generation CFD code STAR CCM+, which uses “computational continuum mechanics” methodology will also be demonstrated. This has the ability to achieve fast solutions on arbitrary polyhedral meshes, and provides object-oriented architecture, enhanced multiphysics and state-of-the-art coupled solver technology.

News Visualization scientists at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) have worked with CEI, maker of EnSight visualization software, to earn a Defense Program Award of Excellence from the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA).

The award recognizes LANL's advanced visualization capabilities within the new Metropolis Center for Modeling and Simulation. The center supports more than 300 physicists, computer scientists and engineers. Completed in 2001, the visualization facilities allow scientists to see and understand the results of the large data sets they produce – often hundreds of millions of cells in size.

Events: Outreach for CFD Open Day
Posted Tue March 02, 2004 @02:15PM
Print version Email story Tweet story
News While the use of CFD continues to grow in large industry, smaller companies in particular are finding it hard to gain access to powerful computers and expensive software. However, a new initiative plans to change that by offering affordable CFD to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

The CFD Outreach Initiative has been organised by the Institute of CFD, based at the Universities of Oxford and Reading, and the European Research Community on Flow, Turbulence and Combustion (ERCOFTAC).

The initiative aims to put SMEs in touch with the most appropriate expert for their particular problem, and will give the companies access to the same expertise as their larger competitors - but without upfront fees.

Now the Outreach is hosting an Open Day to discuss, present and offer advice on fluid dynamics, aimed at small and medium sized companies. The open day will concentrate on the commercial advantages of CFD for small companies by presenting case studies which illustrate how small businesses have derived real commercial benefit from the application of CFD.

The meeting, which is free to all participants, will be held Monday 22nd March 2004 at the University of Reading Black Horse House.

Book your free place early to avoid disappointment by contacting Bette Byrne ICFD Secretary on 01865 273 883 or at

Simulent Featured as Tecplot's Plot of the Month
Posted Tue March 02, 2004 @09:28AM
Print version Email story Tweet story
Post Processing Simulent's Liquid Flow Though a Nozzle is featured as Tecplot's Plot of the Month. Flow simulations help improve nozzle design and predict flow characteristics before actual prototyping. Better nozzle designs improve the efficiency of spraying systems in fuel injectors, burners, printers, sprinklers, vehicles, and many other products.

Results for this animation were generated with Simulent's Simulent-Spray software. Simulent-Spray is a CFD code for simulating free-surface flows. In particular, it models the breakup of liquid jets into sprays by solving the liquid flow Navier-Stokes equations in combination with a volume fraction method which tracks the free surface -- the boundary between liquid and air.

New Software: Fluent Announces “First Pass” CFD Tool
Posted Mon March 01, 2004 @02:41PM
Print version Email story Tweet story
News Fluent Inc., the worldwide leader in computational fluid dynamics, announces FloWizard™, a highly-automated “first-pass” flow simulation tool designed to quickly validate product design concepts in the earliest stages of the development process.

This powerful, yet easy-to-use tool allows engineers with a fundamental understanding of fluid dynamics to gain access to the power of fluid flow and heat transfer modeling to make informed design decisions. FloWizard is also fully customizable, and features peer-to-peer collaboration as a standard feature, allowing advanced users to collaborate with new users for support and the review of results.

By simulating a product’s fluid flow characteristics earlier in the design process, companies using FloWizard can realize several benefits, including:

  • Fewer physical prototypes required, saving significant time and cost
  • Improved decision support information during the early stages of the design process
  • Improved overall design engineering efficiency and productivity
  • Identification of optimum designs earlier in the design cycle
  • Customers receive prototypes sooner, and with higher quality
  • Functionally superior products reach the market more quickly
