Gaining Access to Advanced Turbulence Models

News The FLOMANIA Project is an effort to group the best CFD experts in Europe with the primary purpose of bringing advanced turbulence model research into industrial application. Through the project, industry will receive support in implementation of advanced models by project partners involved in the development of turbulence models.

In order to allow for a precise validation of the new models, complex industrial test cases will be treated, even in the case where property rights will not allow for distribution of the desired geometry and/or test case. The complex test cases are of utmost importance for industry to demonstrate improvements in turbulence modelling in current industrial environments.

The project download page contains a number of freely available workshop documents and presentations.

Solver maq writes "I would like to invite you to visit my site: http://panoramix.ift.uni.wroc.pl/~maq where a new article in pdf format has been included about three different methods of solving the NS equations (SIMPLE, SIMPLER and Vorticity-Stream function approach). Also some new results have been posted a couple of days ago.

It will be nice to hear some comments about my work here.

New Software: AMD64 Support For Windows Visual Studio .NET

AMD64 technology, which provides native 32- and 64-bit support for the AMD Opteron(tm) and AMD Athlon(tm) 64 processors, enables an exceptional Visual Studio .NET development environment. "Whidbey" and the AMD64 platform together provide a clear migration path from 32- to 64-bit Windows application development allowing concurrent development and testing of 32- and 64-bit applications.

The combination of AMD64 technology and Visual Studio "Whidbey" will allow developers of data-intensive applications including rendering, databases, scientific computing and CAD, to capitalize on 64-bit architecture with limited changes in code. Business: Raytheon to Provide CFD Support to NASA

News A business unit of Waltham’s Raytheon Co. has been selected to provide information technology services to NASA Ames Research Center. The competitive, cost-plus-incentive-fee subcontract has a total base value of $50.1 million, including four, one-year options at a total base value of $40 million.

Raytheon Technical Services Company will provide business systems applications support; aerodynamics and computational fluid dynamics research; human factors research; algorithm and software development for air traffic management; advanced networking initiatives to support scientific research; and educational and public outreach. Work will be performed in Mountain View, Calif.

Red Storm Opteron Supercomputer Revealed

The architecture of Red Storm, the new Opteron based supercomputer developed by Sandia National Labs have emerged on the web.

The 77 page presentation [pdf] gives the complete specs of the Red Storm Architecture, designed to be a single system with a fully connected 3D mesh interconnect.

The Red Storm uses 108 cabinets and 10,368 Opteron 2GHz processors, and around 10TB of 333MHz PC2700 DDR memory.

The monster uses Linux on service and IO nodes, LWK (Catamount) on compute nodes, and a version of stripped down Linux on the RAS nodes. The whole beastie takes less than 2MW of total power and cooling.

According to the presentation, system software performance scales "nearly perfectly" with the number of processors to the full size of the computer (page 15) and provides a scaling analysis on the following page.

There's some interesting discussion on Amdahl's Law, and we suggest if you're interested you go over here, and check it out for yourself.
