| Application: Assessing Wind Power Potential of a Site with CFD

The power and energy output of a wind turbine is a cubic function of the wind speed. Doubling the wind speed can mean a substantial increase in the energy output, thereby improving the economic viability of an installation. It is vital to assess the wind power potential of a site with as much accuracy as possible, taking into account seasonal as well as year to year variations in the local wind climate.
The standard way to assess the potential of a site is to measure the on-site wind conditions carefully and consistently for at least a year. Since wind conditions can vary significantly from year to year, measurements are usually correlated with measurements taken at a nearby site, for which a longer-term record is available. The measurements at the site of interest are then 'corrected' for the long-term trend.
At the time of assessing the wind energy potential of the site of Mt-Crosin East, Jakob Vollenweider, of the Swiss utility company JUVENT, considered an alternative option. In addition to a short-term measurement campaign, he commissioned a CFD analysis of the wind conditions on the site, which, together with a long-term data set at the meteorological station of Chasseral a few kilometers away, allowed construction of wind potential maps in the area of Mt-Crosin.

| Civil Protest Against CFD? |

Last week a group of people staged a protest outside Fluent's Sheffield, UK offices. Citing Fluent's "use of software for airflow modelling of missiles", the group was more likely trying to gain pubilicity for themselves by staging an early protest against this week's DSEi defense conference in London, of which Fluent is an exhibitor.
According to this report, four people barricaded a revolving door, two others locked themselves to the door using bicycle locks, and others hung banners including "Fluent Deal in Death" on the main entrance.
Police failed to stop the action because "work was not stopped" (a backdoor remained open), however, they are fortunate that an emergency did not occur in the building with the main entrance blocked.
Civil action has its place, but it is clear that this group is misguided -- another website reported the action as "Sheffield Arms Traders Targeted".

| CFD and FEA Meshing Overview |

Mechanical Engineering magazine has posted an overview of grid generation for FEA and CFD analysis.
"making a mesh of things" covers developments in meshing in the last few years and explains the trade-offs associated with "simple meshing".
Pre-processing mesh technologies can now automatically generate the mesh necessary for analysis. Like most things, this is both good and bad. It means that expert analysts need not be involved in simple analysis, but it also means the software design engineers can run analyses without fully understanding FEA methodology, which could affect design.
