News Hanley Innovations, a small business specializing in aerodynamics and fluid dynamics software development for education and industry, announced today the release of Dr. Hanley’s Aerodynamics: The Wing-Tail Calculator.

The Wing-Tail Calculator was developed using a vortex lattice (vortex rings) CFD method. The program is quite powerful and yet easy-to-use.

Wing-Tail can be used to:

  1. Compute lift-drag coefficients for an isolated wing
  2. Compute lift-drag coefficients for a wing-tail system
  3. Determine neutral points for wing-tail system
  4. Compute trim angle
  5. Compute the aerodynamic coefficients at the trim angle
  6. Simulate ground effect

ANSYS FLUENT Engineous Software has announced that Fluent has joined the FIPER program and will provide a CFD component as part of the FIPER solution.

The FIPER project is a four-year $21.5 million project co-funded by the National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST) as part of its Advanced Technology Program. FIPER establishes a “Federated Intelligent Product EnviRonment” that streamlines the design of engineered products, integrating legacy and best-of-breed analytical and design tools through a web-enabled environment.

Fluent and Engineous will initially team to gather requirements, develop, implement, and test components in conjunction with FIPER pilot projects being executed in real world customer environments. Several pilot projects and demonstrations are underway in major manufacturing organizations such as GE, Parker Hannifin, Goodrich, and Honeywell.

New Software: AVL and TNO Launch New SWIFT CAA Version
Posted Thu July 03, 2003 @03:04PM
Print version Email story Tweet story
AVL AVL and TNO have announced the release of the new SWIFT CAA version in June 2003. This version features a very advanced Computational Aero Acoustics (CAA) capability as an extension to the well-known Computational Fluid Dynamics CFD tool SWIFT.

This major release offers turnkey aerodynamic and aero acoustic simulations in and around moving objects as found in aerospace and automotive industry for the control of aerodynamically generated noise. The CAA software is a development by TNO in The Netherlands and will be presented at the TNO Booth during the Paris Airshow (20 - 25 June 2003).

The novel workflow manager of the SWIFT software integrates meshing, CFD simulations, CAA simulations and visualisation in a very user-friendly way. This saves significant processing time by preventing unnecessary data exchange and mesh generation cycles.

Events: AVL Presents Vehicle Thermal Management Conference
Posted Wed July 02, 2003 @11:20AM
Print version Email story Tweet story
AVL In the last decade vehicle cooling systems have evolved into complex networks designed to efficiently balanced heat transfer between the powertrain and the vehicle. Today, a modern vehicle thermal management systems (VTMS) must coordinate the thermal environments of the underhood, powertrain cooling system and the passenger compartment, with the goal of optimizing performance and customer comfort. As emissions standards become more stringent worldwide and pressure grows to increase vehicle fuel economy, breakthroughs in vehicle thermal management are becoming even more critical.

AVL offers an advanced analysis toolchain for VTMS from 1D to high-end 3D CFD solutions - AVL FIRE and AVL SWIFT. Therefore all the following issues can be addressed and will be discussed at the conference on July 30th, 2003 in Plymouth, Michigan:

  • Complete integrated VTMS toolchains
  • Engine performance and heat rejection
  • Exhaust gas after-treatment
  • Passenger comfort, de-icing and de-fogging
  • Optimization techniques
We cordially invite you to join us for a fruitful day of technical presentations and discussions.
