Application: CFD Modeling Advances Plant Safety Research

The Institute of Safety Research at the Forschungszentrum Rossendorf (FZR) focuses on safety assessments in nuclear plant and the chemical process industry. In this field, most of the passive safety components rely on natural convection to remove heat, and often involve large heat fluxes and boiling flows. We chose CFX-4 to help us in studying these flows because of its open interface that allows us easily to add our own models when required.

Before deciding on CFX-4, we undertook a number of validation projects. An example was the simulation of a scaled emergency condenser (NOKO) constructed in the laboratory of Forschungszentrum Jülich. We modelled the heat transfer from heated tubes in the primary circuit to the pool in the secondary circuit, accounting for the transient and laminar flow in the pool. CFX-4's calculation of the temperature stratification and the development of the plume were in good agreement with the experimental results.

NAFEMS Appoints Chief Operating Officer

The role of NAFEMS in assisting these organisations to apply these techniques in an appropriate manner is expanding rapidly. AMD Opteron Ideal for Low-Cost CFD

Hardware AMD's newly released Opteron CPU has a number of features which make it an ideal CPU for a low-cost multi-processor CFD compute server. Let's take a look at some of the features most useful for CFD computations.

Support for 32-bit and 64-bit operation

Many people are starting to bump against the memory address limitations of 32-bit computing when running large CFD calculations. Moving to 64-bit computing raises the memory address limit from 2^32 (4 gigabytes) to 2^64 (16 exabytes) although it should be noted that the Opteron uses 40-bit physical memory addressing putting the limit at 1 terabyte of physical memory. (An exabyte is 1,000 petabytes, a petabyte is 1,000 terabytes and a terabyte is 1,000 gigabytes.) Such a change will be essential for running next generation CFD problems utilizing millions of grid points.

But many CFD applications (grid generation, for instance) will be fine running in 32-bit address space for some time to come. This is where the Opteron shines because it can run both 32-bit and 64-bit applications natively, whereas the Intel 64-bit processor (the Itanium) uses an emulation layer to run 32-bit applications. The result is good CPU performance in both modes.

Flat Panel Displays Reviewed

Hardware CADALYST has reviewed 9 flat panel monitors for price and quality. Flat panel monitors offer a number of advantages over the old CRT (cathode ray tube) designs. Image quality is superior on flat panels because the image is produced digitally therefore there are no convergence issues or interference problems from nearby electrical equipment. A second area where flat panels shine is in desktop space savings. Large flat panels are only a couple of inches thick allowing them to be used in confined areas. Also, flat panel monitors are roughly 1/3rd the weight of CRT monitors and only draw about 15% of the power used by CRTs.

So, now that you are ready to upgrade to a flat panel, which is the best for the money? The CADALYST review ran the test monitors through a standard test suite from DisplayMate Technology. The CADALYST review then went on to include a number of qualitative tests such as stand quality and resistance to fingerprints.

In the end, all of the flat panels tested got high marks, but the Dell UltraSharp was chosen as the top monitor.
