By R. Buettner, R. Walterskötter and H. Schmidt,
Framatome ANP GmbH TGT1, Germany
The safety aspects of gas turbine power plant have become a major concern around the world, and many local safety authorities now require the analysis of leakage in the gas supply of turbines as a part of the approval to operate plants. Safety is our specialty at the Technical Centre of Framatome ANP GmbH. Capitalizing on our extensive expertise in power plant technology, we offer a multi-disciplinary approach to consulting with, among others, competence in material technologies and thermal fluid dynamics.
Over the years, we have gained comprehensive experience in the safety aspects of gas turbine power, with the analysis of many different plants and designs. In a recent project, we looked at reducing hazards due to hypothetical leakages in the fuel gas system of a turbine. The turbine was located in an acoustic enclosure which employed forced-convection ventilation to diffuse any gas leakage to below a specified concentration level. The specified level is defined as "under control" by the local Health & Safety department. If this condition is fulfilled, the risk of an explosion causing significant damage or injury can be considered as controlled.

Fluent Inc. and Spatial Corp., a Dassault Systèmes company, today announced that Fluent's GAMBIT 2.1 preprocessor, due for general release in the next month, includes native CATIA V4 translation. GAMBIT is the preprocessor supplied with Fluent's world-leading computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software. Fluent has licensed the native CATIA V4 import technology from Spatial, which is the sole provider of true, native CATIA translators.
GAMBIT 2.1 also comes with several new capabilities for supporting the import of complex CAD models, such as automatic connectivity leading to unique Boolean approaches, automated cleanup tools, and easier decomposition tools. It also includes a new, hybrid volume meshing approach (HexCore) based on adaptive Cartesian technology.

The CD adapco Group proudly invites you to the 2003 North American STAR-CD User Conference. This year, we will be hosting conferences in two locations, Detroit and Seattle.
The Detroit Conference will take place at the Doubletree Hotel in Novi, Michigan on May 7th and 8th.
User presentations from an array of industries, including auto, power generation, combustion and aerospace engineering, focusing on analytical results, will be held on the first day of the conference. The second day will be comprised of eight, 1.5 hour parallel sessions where you will gain knowledge of detailed code methodology and procedure.
- Optimization Using STAR-CD and modeFrontier
- Advanced Meshing and CAD Integration Processes
- Reciprocating Engine Modeling
- Underhood Thermal Management and Vehicle Aerodynamics
- Aftertreatment Modeling with STAR-CD Aeroacoustics
- Fuel Cell Modeling
- Rotating Machinery and Fluid Structure Interaction Modeling
We shall host an informal reception following the first day of presentations, where you are welcome to meet with other users, CD adapco Group staff, and enjoy the food and drink at the Doubletree Hotel.
The Seattle Conference will be held at the Bellevue Hilton, Bellevue, Washington on May 9th.
The format will be similar, with User presentations in the morning and some in depth seminars in the afternoon. Breakfast and lunch will be included.
Demonstrations from a variety of hardware and software vendors will be presented throughout both conferences.

dedy writes "I'm a student and beginner in CFD modelling, I use AVL FIRE to create and analyse a gas engine model, I found some difficulties generating surface for an engine port with helical structure. I tried to create the surface in MechanicalDesktop Autocad 2002 and export it as IGES file, but when I opened the file on AVL Fire cad interface, some unnecessary surface like some work plane and surface which I had trimmed and deleted in MechDesk Autocad2002, appear again. And some part of my drawing moved. Any idea? please."

The latest version of FLUENT brings new possibilities for modeling fuel injectors, IC engines, valves, and other moving equipment with its dynamic mesh modeling capability. Users simply set up the initial mesh, prescribe the motion, and sit back and watch as FLUENT automatically changes the mesh to follow the motion. "FLUENT can now easily simulate physical phenomena previously requiring tedious manual preparation," says Fluent's Chief Technology Officer, Dipankar Choudhury. "The applications for dynamic mesh modeling are limitless. Our users are thinking of new ways to use it all the time," he adds.
FLUENT 6.1 incorporates a new cavitation model which is accurate even under very high pressure conditions and new reaction modeling functionality targeted for exhaust system design. IC engine modeling capabilities are further enhanced by crevice and spray-wall interaction models. Also, FLUENT 6.1 offers dynamic coupling capability with WAVE (Ricardo) – in addition to GT-Power (Gamma Technologies, Inc.) and Virtual Engines (Optimum Power Technology).
