News NAFEMS is hosting an Awareness Seminar titled:

Industrial Turbulent Flows: CFD Simulation and Validation
Thursday 6th February 2003
The Institution of Mechanical Engineers, London

Do you trust the results of your CFD analysis?
How do you justify that trust to your boss or customer?
These are questions addressed by this NAFEMS CFD seminar.

Simulation validation may be defined as "the process of determining the degree to which a model is an accurate representation of the real world, from the perspective of the intended uses of the model". But how do you know if your simulation is accurate? Simulations of Turbulent flows in particular can be difficult to validate

Come to this seminar and learn why validation is necessary, how to validate a CFD simulation and how to incorporate validation practices into day-to-day industrial simulations.

Research: CFX makes a Big Bang in Aero-Acoustics

News by Christiane Montavon, CFX

The physics of aero-acoustics makes modeling a challenging task; pressure fluctuations produce noise, which propagates over large distances far from its source. To simulate these phenomena, it is necessary both to model the detailed fluctuating flow in the neighborhood of the sound source, and the far-field propagation effects.

The primary aim of the EU Alessia Project has been to develop software tools for the simulation of fluctuating flows, with particular focus on flow-induced acoustics. The partners in the project are CFX, Technical University of Munich, Shell, Alfa Laval, LMS and Fiat Corporate Research.

Announcements The organising committee are pleased to announce that the
Third International conference on CFD in the Minerals and Process Industries will be held at :
Hilton on the Park
Melbourne, AUSTRALIA
between the 10-12 December 2003.
Conference Web Site

The conference will cover the application of CFD in the mineral processing, metal production, power generation, chemicals, food, oil and gas and other industries. CFD is proving an invaluable tool in the design and optimisation of equipment and processes in these industries.

The conference continues a successful series of meetings aimed at promoting and advancing the application of CFD in the minerals and process industries where technologies often involve challenging aspects such as multiphase flow, combustion, phase change, non-Newtonian flow, etc.

The program will present papers on a wide variety of applications including coal combustion, hydrocyclones, casting, fluid beds, smelting, furnaces, slurries, steelmaking, crystallisation, stirred tanks, granular flow and many others.

Authors wishing to submit a paper are required to send a brief 200 word abstract to

The deadline for abstract submission is 28th February, 2003. Further information on abstract submission can be found under author information from the conference web page.

A short flyer on the conference can be downloaded from

To ensure that you receive updates on the conference complete the pre-registration form on the web site
