Best Practice Guidelines for Marine CFD

News The development of best practice guidelines for marine applications of CFD has been a major task within the MARNET-CFD Thematic Network. These are now complete, and are available to download in pdf format (bpg.pdf - approx. 3MB).

The approach adopted was to bring together three important and recent developments in this field. These elements are:

  1. The newly published ERCOFTAC Best Practice Guidelines for the application of CFD.
  2. The existing ITTC guidelines for uncertainty analysis in CFD. These include manuals on: uncertainty assessment methodology, guidelines for RANS codes, and examples for resistance and flow.
  3. The development of Application Procedures for particular types of marine CFD calculations, eg. propeller flows, non-linear free surface flow etc., using 1 above combined with specific know-how and specialist knowledge.

This has brought MARNET-CFD in line with new initiatives being supported by the European Commission in the area of Quality and Trust in Industrial CFD, and should bring significant benefits in know-how, links to other Networks and databases, and approaches to best practice.

News The FLASH Code group is pleased to announce the immediate availability of FLASH2.2.

The FLASH code is a modular, adaptive, parallel simulation code capable of handling general compressible flow problems in astrophysical environments. FLASH is written in Fortran 90 and C, and is freely available. FLASH is distributed as source code, and has runs on most UNIX platforms. More information can be found at http://flash.uchicago.edu.

All users of previous versions are encouraged to upgrade. The download is available at:

Business: CFX Wins Multi-Year Order from Siemens

ANSYS CFX The CFX division of AEA Technology, a leading supplier of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software and services to the power generation, mechanical and chemical process industries, announces a global multi-year commitment by Siemens Power Generation to use CFX for design analysis by engineering teams in both Germany and the United States. CFX software and expertise is used by Siemens to optimize design and improve efficiency in all parts of their steam and gas turbines.

The CFX suite of integrated software provides Siemens with the ability to simulate and visualize flows inside a turbine, enabling a better understanding of the issues involved in creating superior designs. Siemens Power Generation, Mülheim an der Ruhr, Germany, has used CFX software to develop design rules for highly-efficient steam turbine blades that were subsequently employed to design the world’s most efficient steam turbine to date, with 48.5 percent gross efficiency, for the VEAG power plant in Boxberg, Germany.

Project Boosts Performance of Rotor-Stator Flow Calculations

During the last three and a half years, CFX has actively participated, as CFD software provider, in the European HPNURSA (High Performance Numerical Unsteady Rotor Stator Analysis) research project. The project, which started in 1998, recently closed with a workshop at the 21st IAHR meeting held in Lausanne, Switzerland in September 2002. Within the project, CFX worked closely with VA TECH HYDRO, as industrial end-user, and the Universities of Lausanne (EPFL) and Lyon (ECL) as academic partners.

The complexity of unsteady rotor-stator flows makes them highly computer intensive, as they require a transient simulation with sufficiently small time steps to resolve the unsteady features of the flow. Furthermore, the full 360-degree machine must generally be modelled, leading to multiple blades per row in the simulation. These demands increase CPU and memory requirements by at least an order of magnitude compared to steady-state simulations. If such computations are to be tractable for industrial users, the use of advanced computer and programming technologies is essential. These issues have been addressed by the HPNURSA project, providing improvements to the unsteady time integration formulation, enhancements of the transient rotor-stator interface and the optimization of the parallel performance of CFX-TASCflow and CFX-5.
