New Software: CFX-TASCflow Version 2.12

ANSYS CFX The latest version of CFX-TASCflow, the leading computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software for mechanical engineering, offers a new improved cavitation model, solves problems four times as large as the previous release, provides significant usability improvements and support of new 64-bit systems including Itanium. The new cavitation model, which is based on the volume of fluids (VOF) approach, provides solutions for many common application areas such as hydraulic flows in pumps, turbines, inducers and fuel injection systems. The new release supports 64-bit architectures such as HP UX 11, Solaris 8, and AIX 5I, making it possible to access more memory and solve problems of eight to ten million nodes in size in serial mode; more in parallel mode. "CFX-TASCflow Version 2.12 further advances CFX’s leading position in the turbomachinery industry and helps demonstrate why leading companies such as Siemens, Sulzer Innotec, Dresser-Rand and many others depend on our software as their primary design tool,” said Dr. Michael Raw, Vice-President CFX Product Development. “We are continuing to expand the capabilities in our CFX system of software, ensuring that our CFD tools and services are uniquely qualified for solving real-world industrial problems.”

Business: ThermoAnalytics Signs Resellers

News ThermoAnalytics, Inc. announced today it has entered into an agreement with XC Engineering (XC) for XC to represent TAI´s radiation solver software in the Republic of Italy for sales, support and engineering consulting purposes.
The same is announced for the SouthernEastern Europe region with SimTec Software & Services Ltd, based in Greece and with A-Ztech Ltd for Turkey and Israel.

ThermoAnalytics specializes in high-end radiation modeling and infrared signature prediction software for industrial, scientific and defense applications worldwide. In addition to its new presences, ThermoAnalytics, Inc. also has Associates for their products in Japan, Korea, the United Kingdom, Germany, Austria and Swizzerland. TAI´s headquarters is located in Calumet, MI.

Application: CFD Aids Thrust Reverser Design

Application It is by now standard practice at Boeing to design basic aerodynamic surfaces, such as the wings, engine nacelles, and fuselage, using computational fluid dynamics.

It is less common and often more difficult to use CFD to analyze more complex parts of the airplane, such as high lift systems, engine compartments, auxiliary power units, or the behavior of the efflux from engine thrust reversers.

When dealing with thrust reversers, designers must know exactly where the exhaust plumes go, and they must know it early in the design cycle, because it affects such basic decisions as the placement of the engine on the wing. The enabling technology and research group at Boeing's commercial aircraft unit has developed a computer simulation that provides an early look at thrust reverser exhaust plumes.

New Software: AVL Releases FIRE V8.1

News AVL has successfully released FIRE Version 8.1. With its achievable gain in speed and its wide-ranging applicability, FIRE Version 8.1 sets new standards among currently available simulation tools.

During its development a major focus was put particularly on user-friendliness, enabling the design engineer to carry out complex calculation tasks with a few operations. The basis for this is the integrated CFD Workflow Manager which guides the user through the CFD workflow, hence considerably reducing training and project turnaround times. Although also available on UNIX platforms, the look and feel of the graphical user interface resembles the quasi standard set up by Microsoft’s Office applications, making it extremely easy to use.

The combination of FIRE with the BOOST one-dimensional gas-dynamic simulation tool and HYDSIM for the one-dimensional calculation of injection system components represents a software package capable of providing a comprehensive solution for engine thermodynamics, flow, mixture formation, combustion and aftertreatment system related analysis and optimisation tasks.
