News Flow Science, Inc. announced it has entered into an agreement with HyperINFO Inc. for HyperINFO to sell Flow Science’s FLOW-3D® computational fluid dynamics software in the Republic of China on Taiwan.

Flow Science, Inc. is a privately held software company specializing in high fidelity fluid dynamics modeling software for industrial and scientific applications worldwide. In addition to its new presence in Taiwan, Flow Science also has Associates for FLOW-3D® in Japan, Germany, Korea, Finland, Norway, Italy, Spain & Portugal, Russia, Hong Kong, the United Kingdom and Southeast Asia. Flow Science is located in Santa Fe, NM.

HyperINFO Inc. is a privately held Taiwanese company that also acts as a distributor/reseller for a variety of CAD/CAM/CAE products. HyperINFO Inc. is based in Taipei, Taiwan.

New Software: ICEM Announces Cart3D Flow Solver

News ICEM CFD, a subsidiary of ANSYS, has announced that they will release a commercial version of CART3D. ICEM recently acquired distribution rights to the NASA Ames CART3D program for the aerospace, automotive, turbo machinery, electronics/electromagnetics and process industries.

Cart3D is a high-fidelity inviscid analysis package for conceptual and preliminary aerodynamic design. The program uses adaptively refined Cartesian grids to discretize the space surrounding a geometry and cuts the geometry out of the set of "cut-cells" which actually intersect the boundary.

The CART3D program was recently named "Software of the Year" by NASA.

New Software: CFX-5.5.1 Released

News CFX is pleased to announce the release of CFX-5.5.1, the latest version of this industry leading Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software system. This release, which started shipping to customers in July, allows engineers to apply CFX-5's unsurpassed robustness, accuracy and scalability to a whole new range of industrial flows by providing new models and offering near total interoperability between the wide range of existing models. As an example, multiphase batch mixer analyses can now combine existing coupled multiphase fluid models with proven Multiple Frame of Reference (MFR) technology to quickly solve these physically complex flows. The effects of chemical reactions and heat transfer can also now be included in MFR models. In addition, all models can also be used in conjunction with CFX-5's existing Generalized Grid Interface capability.

Dr. Ross Haywood with Hatch Ltd., Australia has been an early user of the new release. "I found the new release to be absolutely first-rate," Haywood said. "The ability to use all of the models together makes it possible to apply CFX-5 to a much wider range of applications. That's significant, because CFX-5 has long been unique in its ability to solve larger and more complex problems than the other codes that I am familiar with. I am extremely pleased at the rate at which this code has been improving."

Major enhancements have been added to multiphase and free surface capabilities. The number of phases in a multiphase analysis is now unlimited, so that fluidized beds and particle separators with multiple particle sizes can be simulated with ease. The free surface flow model has been expanded to include a bulk energy equation, low speed variable density, fluid-specific additional variables and fluid-specific multicomponent fluids. These capabilities extend the applicability of free surface models to include, for example, mold filling and contaminant dispersion. A surface tension model is now available which allows the engineer to predict flows accurately in capillary tubes and the coalescence of liquid droplets.

Application: Endangered Fish Benefit from CFD

Application Environmental applications of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) have become more common in recent years with the increased availability and ease of use of commercial grid generation software and CFD solvers. Pacific Northwest National Laboratory has been supporting studies by the US Army Corps of Engineers, Portland District by creating and applying Reynolds-Averaged Navier Stokes (RANS) CFD models to the Columbia River and portions of the dam structures at several hydroelectric projects, including the tailrace of The Dalles Dam.

Numerical models in The Dalles tailrace are being used to support efforts to reduce fish mortality associated with fish passaging of the hydroelectric project. At The Dalles, several locations have been proposed for a high flow outfall that would move fish around the dam rather than through the turbines or over the spillway.

One of the oldest and finest establishments of its kind in India, the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) has grown into a premier center of research and advanced instruction. Its Combustion Gasification and Propulsion Laboratory works mostly on fundamental research in combustion and its applications in industry.

A recent research project focused on investigating the effects of flow recirculation on the efficiency of a gas furnace, the goal being to optimize the position of the fuel nozzles. CFD simulations were conducted in parallel with experimental work on a typical preheated-air furnace.
