A CFD Haiku

CFD Haiku As a tribute to the "art" of CFD, we are kicking off the Official CFD Review Haiku Poetry Contest. A haiku is a small contemplative poem which valorizes nature, color, season, contrasts and surprises. For our contest, the topic must be related to the field of CFD. The basic haiku format is three lines of 17 syllables arranged in a 5-7-5 pattern.

You are encouraged to send in your CFD haiku for publication here each week. There is no reward other than perhaps personal enlightenment. So, silence the mind, yield to spontaneity and send in your CFD haiku today.

Application: CFD Used to Study Surface to Air Missles

Application Scientists at the NAS Division's Applications Branch have used NASA's Cart3D CFD software to analyze the unsteady flight of infrared-guided, man-portable surface-to-air missles (SAMs).

The Cart3D solver's capabilities were extended to simulate the unique flight characteristics of the SAMs which make them difficult to simulate computationally. Scientists used the NASA Advanced Supercomputing facility at Ames Research Center to conduct the steady and unsteady simulations on both a 1024-processor and 512-processor SGI Origin 3000 system. More than 720 simulations were completed on meshes totaling almost 2.4 billion cells.

"Results from preliminary NAS studies presented to the DIA have been met with enthusiastic support," said Mike Aftosmis. The steady and unsteady results have shed new light on the flight characteristics of these missiles.
The Cart3D package is an inviscid Cartesian grid flow solver which provides end-to-end simulation of three-dimensional flows around complex vehicles.

EZ-FSI User Training Course

CD-adapco The CD adapco Group will hold a training course for their new fluid structure interaction tool -- EZ-FSI.

The course will be held February 18-20, 2002 in Nürnberg, Germany. The course will cover the use of EZ-FSI in a range of industrial applications and will include lectures, demonstrations and tutorials. Attendees will receive a trial version of EZ-FSI.

ANSYS Launches CFD Pre-Processor

Grid Generation ANSYS has announced a new pre- and post-processing environment aimed at the mechanical engineering industry. AI*Environment combines the CFD pre-processing technology from ICEM CFD Engineering with ANSYS's simulation expertise.
"AI*Environment is a true leader in CAD-based meshing and post-processing technology to address the needs of mechanical engineers. This solution provides the state-of-the-art geometry, input, repair and meshing tools necessary to solve the most complex meshing issues," stated Michael Wheeler, vice president of marketing for ANSYS, Inc.
