FEATURE: CFD Modeling of an Internal Rotary Pump

Application Rob Broberg of AEA Technology has provided us with his analysis of an internal rotary pump (a type of gear pump).
The pump studied is an example of a special class of internal rotary pump which utilizes cycloidal gear profiles. This means that the gear profile is generated by rolling, without slippage, a circle around a larger fixed circle. Usually the outer gear, or trochoid, is generated in this fashion and the inner gear is the conjugate shape to the outer gear. This leads to the term generated-rotor or gerotor pump.
This analysis is quite advanced in that it is transient and involves moving mesh. The article includes a number of animated images which serve to greatly enhance understanding of the flow field.

I agree. CERFACS is an international research association which specializes in numerical models, SIMULOG provides a number of software packages including an excellent tetrahedral mesher, OPTIFLOW is a provider of CFD consulting services.

Application: Using CFD to Optimize APU Design

Application Hamilton Sundstrand Power Systems has used CFD to optimize the design of an auxiliary power unit (APU) for the new Embraer ERJ 170 regional jet.

An APU is a gas turbine used to provide electrical and pneumatic power during ground operations. The unit also acts as a backup supply of electrical power when airborne. The design of the APU for the Embraer jet was more complicated than usual.

"It was a particularly challenging component to design because there were constraints regarding size, drag, and acoustics," says Jose Goldstein, senior engineer at Hamilton Sundstrand Power Systems.

Application: Airplane Winglets Optimized Using CFD

Application Embraer has utilized CFD in the design of winglets to be added to their popular corporate and regional jet aircraft.

The Embraer Legacy executive jet.

A winglet is a wing-like surface attached to the tip of the wing that is used to improve fuel efficiency and climbing capability. It accomplishes this by acting like a small sail with a lift component that generates a traction force, draining energy from the tip vortices. Consequently, it reduces the vortex strength, lowering induced drag.

Help Desk tbg_guj writes: "I am a student of VJTI, Mumbai University. As part of my ME curriculum, I am doing my project in CFD using CFDRC software. While modeling a 3D geometry, I have encounterd the problem of grid orthogonality. The problem is a 3D model of the flow over a car body. If I divide the flow channel into multiple domains, I have an interface problem in the solver. Please help.

If anyone has a case study similar to my problem, please mail me."
