The Future of Design Analysis (as ANSYS Sees It)

News Paul Bemis, Vice President of Engineering at ANSYS, has written an article for Design News which looks into the future of engineering analysis and where it fits into the design cycle.

ANSYS got into the CFD game last year with the purchase of ICEM CFD so their views on the future have some implication for all CFD enthusiasts.

Bemis sees simulation occuring earlier in the design process, but at a reduced complexity spurred by the growth of application-specific GUIs. Another important prediction is continued expansion of web-based tools for sharing data. Bemis envisions a system in which no knowledge is lost from the early proof-of-concept stage through the final ready-for-production stage.

CFD Canada Offers Industrial Problem Solving with CFD Seminar

Announcements CFD Canada will present a seminar titled "Solving Industrial Problems using Advanced Engineering Software for Fluid Flow, Heat, Chemical and Stress Analysis" on October 15-17, 2001. The seminar will be held at CERCA in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

New Microfluidic Disposables Developed with CFD

Application Microfluidic disposables for cellular and chemical detection (sometimes called "lab on a chip") are becoming popular as a way to simplify and speed medical analysis. The systems typically consist of a small (credit card sized) microfluidic device connected to a larger desktop-sized analysis unit. Micronics is developing a disposable total-analysis chip which can handle all of the analysis steps on a chip.

The new chips use a laminate design which permits construction of 3-dimensional microfluidic structures, such as, focusing channels for cell analysis. Micronics is using CFD for design and analysis of the focusing channels in order to determine the complete pressure and velocity fields and to predict the dimensions of the core stream.

The results and comparision with experiment are available in this pdf file.

CEI Releases Free Collaborative Tools

Post Processing CEI, makers of the visualization software EnSight, are releasing EnLighten and EnVideo free of charge on their web site.

EnLighten is a player which allows others to see your EnSight visualizations across the network.

EnLiten users can manipulate 3D models, view models and animations from different perspectives, and run a variety of 3D animations provided by EnSight users.

EnVideo plays a proprietary video format (evo) which offers better quality than AVI and MPEG video formats. The player can be embedded in MS Powerpoint, Internet Explorer or Netscape for presentations.
