CFD - A Critical Tool for Urban Wind Siting

	CAEbridge LLC is helping Windation Energy Systems, a manufacturer of vertical axis wind turbines, with the assessment of wind resources and optimal turbine placements on roof tops. The solution offered utilizes CAEbridge customizations on several open source tools including OpenFOAM. The overall approach allows CFD analysis to be performed on a chosen street address and reveals critical information on the cost/benefit analysis of purchasing wind turbines and their optimal arrangements.

	Extreme care has to be taken in locating the optimal installation spot for turbines. The power generated by a wind turbine is proportional to the cube of the incoming wind speed. Hence even small deviations from the optimal spot can result in significant loss of power, hence dollar savings. Thus, significant wind resource assessment effort goes into the siting of rural wind farms using weather maps, long term data acquisition and empirical models.
